14-DAY SOUTH AMERICAN EXPRESS TOUR ITINERARY
Fly-in to Cali
MotoDreamer staff pick you up at the airport and bring you to the hotel. Depending on what time in the day you arrive, we will meet to sort out paperwork and prep the bikes. A group briefing meeting will be arranged once the last rider has arrived.
Cali to Pasto
After breakfast, we get right on the bikes and head south. Like most days on this tour, we have a lot of miles to cover. The route south is beautiful especially, in the western Andean mountain range. You will have a constant smile on your face as we twist and turn through the gorges and canyons of southern Colombia. Our goal is Pasto the last big old colonial city in Colombia. We will stroll to the main square for dinner and soak up some history.
Pasto to Quito (Border crossing)
Your Colombian visit is brief. As we only have time for one more stop at the very special Las Lajas cathedral built across a canyon before we reach the Colombo-Ecuadorian border. We usually cross in a matter of a couple of hours after inspection of the bikes and personal paperwork. Then we are on our way to the second country on the tour. We stop at the Equator monument before reaching Capital city Quito for the night.
Quito to Cuenca
From Quito, we continue south on the avenue of volcanoes passing snow-capped Cotopaxi among many more. We stop to try the local grilled guinea pig, Cuy. The road is beautiful paved and with very scenic surroundings. Our stop for the night is the world heritage site Cuenca where a walk-about will be a nice change to a nice day in the motorcycle seat.
Cuenca to Mancora (Border crossing)
As we ride out of Cuenca we start the descent down from the Andes towards the Pacific coast. As we hit the coast we will once again be doing some paperwork at the Ecuadorian/Peruvian border. This is usually quick and we are back on the road. This time it’s a nice ride along the pacific ocean to surf town Mancora. We dine freshly caught tuna and other delicious seafood.
Rest-day Mancora
We stay near the beach and for anyone wanting to dip their feet or body, this is a nice place to spend a little time relaxing in the sun. For those with adventure in the blood, surf classes are taught and a small tuc-tuc city race is always a hit in Mancora.
Mancora to Trujillo
From Mancora we enter the Peruvian desert. It’s all paved but huge sand dunes on both sides of the road as we make our way south. In Trujillo we will visit the ancient Chan Chan city in the sand. Quite a site and not very known outside Peru.
Trujillo to Huaraz
Soon after we start our ride south in the desert we turn east and into the Andes mountains. We ride through the crazy Duck canyon. It’s a one-line cliffhanger road with more than 40 tunnels cut out of the pure cliff. When we reach the top we are not far from mountain climbers favorite HQ town Huaraz. It’s usually chilly at the high altitude and some might feel slight dizziness due to the altitude. Snow-capped peaks surround the town.
Huaraz to Lima
We stay up on the altiplano for a while as we ride even further south along beautiful lakes and jagged snowcapped mountain tops of the Cordilleras Blancas. Then its switchback turns to get back down to the coast before entering the multi-million inhabited city of Lima. We will munch on Pisco sour and Ceviche in the Capital.
Lima to Huacachina
A late start from Lima and we continue along the Pacific coast to Huacachina, an oasis town in the middle of the sand dunes. Here we will get our adrenaline pumping by taking a ride in one of the special built V8 sand buggies. It’s the undisputed best way to experience a sunset in the desert and here the daredevils can also try their snowboarding skills riding down huge sand dunes strapped on aboard.
Huacachina to Nazca
A short ride from Huacachina we arrive in Nazca. Famous for the Nazca lines. Huge figures are drawn in the desert and are only really visible from the sky. So we take to it in a small 6 or 8 seat plane. It’s a flyover that reveals figures that you have to wonder who made hundreds or possibly thousands of years ago.
Nazca to Abancay
Its back in the saddle for a long day of knee scraping as we head east into the Andes mountains. Thousands and thousands of curves on this route take us up to Abancay for the night. The scenery is incredible and the riding is world-class.
Abancay to Cusco
The last day on the bikes is not a dull one either. We continue our climb up to another world heritage site, the beautiful city of Cuzco. Here we will have time to enjoy a small city tour and see the Plaza de Armas and other colonial time architectural wonders. We dine delicious food and say our goodbyes to those who are not doing the one-day extension trip to Machu Picchu.
Fly-out from Cusco
MotoDreamer staff will take you to the airport in time for your flight. If you wish to stay longer we are happy to help you make arrangements. We strongly suggest staying in Cusco for a day or two after the Motorcycle trip and enjoy a day trip to Machu Picchu.
Optional 1-day visit to Machu Picchu
If you have never been to one of the world’s true wonders Machu Picchu a 1-day extension is available upon request. Please inquire with plenty of time in advance. Regulations of number of visitors require that we confirm availability for this extension, plus the cost depending on the season.
